Spring 2008

++ Another award-winning film sound designed and mixed by John Bosch at Ground Control Studio!! "Small Apartment " has won the Grand Jury Prize for Short Filmmaking at the 2008 SxSW Film Festival !! Congratulations to Andrew Betzer, his cast, and crew (Shawn and me) !!

++ Bosch is currently recording a record for the amazing Tribecastan . This will be the first time he's ever recorded an African fujara. And an Indian benju. And a Thai sheng. And a hurdy gurdy! (We hope to post pictures of these instruments soon.) Tribecastan are two fun guys who travel around the world, collect amazing instruments, and know how to play them. Sounds like French-Moroccan cafe music by way of the East Village and New Orleans. Unbelievable and really fun stuff. Tribecastan features the multi-talented John Kruth, who has written a book on Townes Van Zant and toured with the Violent Femmes among many other things.

++ Trider has put the finishing touches on "Buster", a great film by Lovisa Inserra and featuring a score by Mando Diao.

++ Bosch has been sound designing and mixing two interesting and entertaining Indian-themed documentary films. "Laughter Club", by Neil Davenport, is garnering much interest, and excerpts debuted at Pangea Day, seen around the world. "Flying On One Engine", directed by Joshua Weinstein, was screened at the 2008 SxSW Film Festival and Full Frame, and was given 4 out of five stars by the Austin American Statesmen.

Jan 2008

++ This just in: Ryan Piotrowicz's "The Project" has won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival!! Congratulations to Ryan, Tim, and everyone at Renart Films!!

++ Bosch attended the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Ut, where he met many great people, saw some great films, went to a bunch of parties, and met Danny Glover and Nick Cannon.

Fall 2007

++ Last fall saw so many projects it's difficult to keep track. We had two projects by Renart Films, the entertaining "Goodbye Baby" (re-mix/sweetening) and Ryan Piotrowicz amazing first feature, "The Project", starring Michael Stahl-David ("Cloverfield"). On "The Project", Bosch provided original music, sound design, sweetening and mixing work, and was assisted by Trider's sound editing skills. Both films were accepted into the Slamdance Film Festival, Jan. '08. Additionally, post production for Andy Betzer's short film "Small Apartment" was also completed in time for its premiere at Slamdance Film Festival.

We're very proud to have our work represented with 3 films in the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival!

++ Post-production was completed by Trider on Lovisa Inserra's Super 8 feature film "Buster", starring Cosmo Inserra.

++ Tristate Inventories brought his talented gang in for some deep funk/soul tracking.

++ Gullwing recorded 4 songs with Bosch for their upcoming EP.

++ Bosch completed a video project for Martin Walker's song "My Darkest Hour", which can be viewed on YouTube.

August 2007

++ Bosch has been producing a long form live video of hard-rocking Brooklyn trio, The Netherlands, with genius wunderkind guitarist Timo Ellis (Cibo Matta/Sean Lennon/Morningwood, etc). Bosch has known Timo for almost 20 years, attending college w/ him back in the day. This is the first serious collaboration between the two and we'll be psyched to present this unbelievable ROCK DOC to the public in the near future. Watch for samples. The Netherlands are amazing. Check out Timo's other projects as well. This guy gives Jimmy Page a run for his money, and that ain't no hyperbolic joke!

++ "The Camden 28" is extended at NYC's Cinema Village! See below.

June/July 2007

++ "The Camden 28", Anthony Giacchinno's great documentary mixed by Bosch makes it's New York theatrical debut at Cinema Village. The film received rave reviews from many publications. The New York Times calls it "Concise, inventive, part paranoid thriller, part heist picture… scene for scene, a brilliant merger of political outrage and filmmaking chops, and the most suspenseful movie in theaters right now.” The film has been picked up for distribution by First Run Features, and will also show on PBS's POV.

++ Another film mixed by Bosch, "Gender Redesigner", directed by Johnny Bergman, made it's NYC debut in June at the NewFest, AMC Loews Cinema on 34th St. It then played in San Francisco at the 31st Annual Frameline International Film Festival.

++ Outasight, a Bronx soul/jazz/hip hop outfit fronted by the charismatic singer/rapper Outasight, is recording their debut cd with Bosch this summer. The music features a unique blend of jazzy up tempo grooves and street smart singing and rapping. Picture Jamiroquai from the Bronx.

May 2007

++ Working with The Film Company, we are pleased to provide live recording services for Brand Upon The Brain! performances, May 9-15th, in NYC. This means we will record the likes of narrarators Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Eli Wallach, Crispin Glover, Joie Lee, and our favorite, Isabella Rossellini, for inclusion in the DVD release of Guy Maddin's stunning film.

Mar/April 2007

++This just in!: Hypernova, an Iranian rock band from Tehran, will record one, maybe more songs with Bosch, on Friday the 13th. Peace through RAWK, dudes! That's the message of the moment. Their story is quite incredible.

++ In March, Trider finished tracking with Alexa G. and her collaborator, Tim Foljahn (Cat Power, Thurston Moore, Townes Van Zandt). Her record is due out in the summer.

++ Bosch recorded four songs with New York punk band Shiny Shoes. You haven't heard anything til you've heard lead singer Cat sing. Look for an mp3 posted soon.

++ Trider recorded several songs with New York rock band Felix Unger.

++ Bosch sound designed and mixed two short films, "All Day Long" directed by Andrew Semans, and "Kali Ma" by Soman Chainani. He has just learned that Kali Ma was accepted into the Honolulu Film Festival for May.

++ Bosch finished mixing Ivo Stainoff's excellent documentary on women in the trucking industry, Alligator on the Zipper.

January/Feb 2007

++ So much happening it's difficult to keep track, and I haven't updated in a couple months. The studio made a very important and totally awesome purchase: a Trident Series 65 analog console. It was purchased from a studio in Boston and totally restored and re-capped throughout by technician Bo Dixon, who then drove it down to New York himself, thereby saving us the huge hassle of driving up to Bean Town.

++ Chad Hughes, aka American Mind, has re-located to Toronto to become a rock star. But he already was one. However, now he's got a manager actively involved in his career. John Bosch will continue to co-write and produce tracks with him, the latest being "American Mind", which is in the mix stage.

++ Trider has been recording new tunes with the lovely and talented Alexa Georgevich.

++ Darkon, The Movie was re-mixed by Raphael Laski and John Bosch in preparation for a theatrical release by IFC.

++ Alice Neel, a documentary by Andrew Neel about his grandmother, has been mixed by Raphael Laski, with assistance from John Bosch. We expect great things from this film as well.

++ John Bosch has mixed the trailer for Jesus and the Faithway Doves, a documentary about a North Carolina-based family gospel group.

November

++ "Camden 28", the documentary directed by Anthony Giachinno and mixed by John Bosch, has been picked up for distribution by First Run Features. We made a few minor tweaks in the mix to get it ready for final mastering.

++ Projects on the horizon: former Fort Ancient guitarist/keyboardist Rance Piatt brings his current project New Villains in for tracking. To get an idea of how cool the New Villains stuff is, picture Eno meets Postal Service with some Autechre-style beats and Edge-style guitars. Really looking forward to this one.

++ Chad Hughe5 song "Fear" is almost complete. Our favorite violinist Cody Geil came in last week for some more awesome additions, adding a classical element to this industrial/gothic/pop dance track.

++ Trider will shortly begin working with returning client, the lovely and talented Alexa Georgevich.

October

++ The month is halfway thru, and what a crazy month! Sat. Oct. 14 began our preparations for recording composer Jason Staczek's soundtrack for Guy Maddin's new film, "Brand Upon the Brain", which premiered Sunday at the New York Film Festival's closing night at Lincoln Center.

We planned on setting up the musicians (New York's Ensemble Sospeso) upstairs in our building's commercial space. It just so happens the space is being renovated and our landlord graciously allowed us to use it to record this 12-piece orchestra. We rented a grand piano, rented vintage M150s, set up our Decca tree for mid/side recording, ran a 16-channel snake and monitoring upstairs, and were pretty much ready to go. Well, after building baffles for the windows and skylights, obtaining 10 music stands, chairs, and other necessities not found lying around are studio.

++ Tuesday, Oct. 17 the great and beautiful Isabella Rossellini came in to provide voice over for the film. She is a true professional and both her and Guy were splendid to work for. Guy liked our studio so that was quite a compliment.

++ Mixing is almost complete on Josh's "Tales", Martin's record (to be called "It's Winter Again"). New projects begun: Chad Hughe5's thinking man's electro-spiritual dance/pop. Really looking forward to this.

++ Also it's great to announce that Anthony Giacchino's "Camden 28" was picked up for distribution by First Run Features. We're going to do a bit more tweaking on the mix and add some musical elements next week.

Aug/Sept

++ "Handsome" Dick Manitoba (the Dictators) records vocals for upcoming Fleshtones project.

++ F/X field recording (it's a concept album after all!) and final tracking for "Tales From the Cold War". Mixing 85% complete.

++ Logjam "Stumped" CD complete.

++ Session musicians Cody Geil (Violinist), Meena Cho (Cellist), and Adrienne Hecker (vocalist) track on Martin Walker's "Time I Should Go" CD. Begin mixing.

July 1
++ Mixing commences on Tales From the Cold War, Logjam, Diako.

++ Ongoing Mayors of Williamsburg tracking, mixing maybe an overdub or 40!

June 23
Welcome to our new website. It's been a long time coming and we couldn't have done it without Masis Pazarjian (masis at optonline.com).

Here's some back news:

May/June:
++ New sessions include moodmaker Martin Walker's 10 songs and minimalist genius Paul Greenhaw's math music.

++ Tales from the Cold War about 80% tracked. Varying our approaches pay interesting musical dividends.

++ Finishing touches on Logjam's full length. Them jokesters invited 40 friends to sing the chorus on their cover of "Venga Boys". Need I say more?

Feb/Mar/April
++ These two months were mostly, but not entirely, about "Marvelous"

. It was a challenging yet utterly grand experience working with Siofra Campbell, Dominic Rippel Shauna Slevin, Joe Klotz, and exec. producer Lynn Goldner.

Between these intense days of mixing, listening, building foley beds, listening some more, and mixing a few more times, there was still a LOT of other great projects coming down the studio stairs:

++ John Bosch re-mixed the soundtrack to the feature documentary "The Camden 28" with producer/director Anthony Giacchinno. The film went on to win twice at the
"Philadelphia Film Fest"

.

++ Murray Trider and John Bosch handled audio syncing issues for Cineric, Inc. The project entailed importing separate digitized audio and film footage from the 1970s and '80s (of interviews with civil rights leaders) into Pro Tools. We manually synced audio to pic then executed laybacks of segments to DAT for archival and print master purposes.

++ Tales from the Cold War, tracking away.

Dec '05/Jan '06
++ Joshua Weill brought his much anticipated and inspiring project "Tales from the Cold War. It's gonna be a great "concept album" in the tradition of all those great concept albums. ++ We began sound editing "Marvelous" and making fixes of location audio. Common needs were low and high shelf eqs (car rumble and A/C type noises, respectively). And a lot of other needs too; sonic riddles we eventually solved. Of course.

++ Logjam getting their tracks on.

++ Diako getting his track on.
